As we grow, both as individuals and as a society, we recognize the commonalities that bind us to our neighbours. Whether through song, dance, film, or art, we all try to express ourselves and understand each other. The IECPC (Interdisciplinary Expressive Culture Performance Collaboration) is a student-run initiative that aims to bridge the gaps between various disciplines of performance and cultural production in order to create an ongoing collaborative forum utilizing music, dance, the visual arts, film, theatre, and poetry. It delves into such questions as how sculpture can coexist with film, African traditional dance with contemporary dance, and the West African kora with the saxophone. It is a vision of interaction between disciplines that can foster the development of a greater interest and engagement with the performance and scholarship of African music and dance.

On September 29 and 30, 2006, the IECPC presented Humanity in Harmony, the first-ever multidisciplinary show of its kind, at York University’s Accolade East Theatre. Featuring numerous performances from all sectors of the fine arts, it exemplified the potential for collaboration between seemingly disparate styles and forms of expression. It was a night of entertainment and education, which was well-received by all who attended. In two shorts nights, this event cultivated a community of collaboration and appreciation that transcended mere moments on stage.

The cooperative spirit of Humanity and Harmony carries with it the potential to nurture a stronger society that can dance together to a thousand different songs.
